How the 1 minute typing test works

Pick words or paragraph mode and start typing — the sixty-second timer begins on your first key, not on page load, so you can read ahead and settle your hands first. Speed uses the standard convention of five correct characters per word, which keeps a one minute typing test score comparable to any other test you've taken. Wrong keys don't count toward speed; they show up in accuracy instead, and backspace fixes the current word.

When the timer ends you get WPM, accuracy and a band telling you what the number means. The full typing speed test page explains the scoring math in more depth if you want it.

What one minute is good for — and what it isn't

One minute is the daily check-in length: quick enough to take with your morning coffee, long enough to produce a real number. Its weakness is variance — a single mangled word can swing a sixty-second score by several WPM, so never judge yourself on one run. Take it daily, watch the weekly average, and the trend line is as honest as any longer test.

If you're preparing for an employment screening, practice on the 3 minute typing test instead — that's the length most offices use. And when you want to know whether your speed survives fatigue, the 5 minute typing test is the honest answer.

What counts as a good score in 60 seconds

The commonly cited adult average is around 40 WPM. Hunt-and-peck typists usually land between 15 and 25, practiced touch typists between 60 and 80, and anything above 80 is leaderboard territory here. On a one-minute run, add a mental error bar of about ±5 WPM before you celebrate or despair.

Accuracy matters more than the headline number: 45 WPM at 98% beats 55 WPM at 85% in every real document, because corrections cost more time than slow keys. If your accuracy reads below 95%, slow down until it doesn't — speed follows clean hands, not the other way round. Ten minutes on Typing Racer or the untimed paragraph typing practice page between tests moves the number faster than repeat testing ever will.

Frequently asked questions

Is a 1 minute typing test accurate?

It's accurate enough to trend but noisy run to run — one bad word can move a sixty-second score by several WPM. Take it daily and trust the weekly average rather than any single result.

What is a good score on a 1 minute typing test?

At or above the ~40 WPM adult average with 95%+ accuracy is solid. 60+ WPM is strong professional speed, and 80+ puts you in the fastest group of everyday typists.

Why does my score change every time I take it?

Sixty seconds is a small sample: word luck, a single typo streak or a cold start all show up in the number. Longer tests smooth this out — that's why the 3 minute test is the better benchmark.

Should I use words mode or paragraph mode?

Words mode for tracking raw speed day to day; paragraph mode when you want the number to reflect real writing with capitals and punctuation. Expect paragraph scores to read a few WPM lower.

How often should I take a one minute typing test?

Once a day is plenty. Between tests, practice with games or paragraphs — testing measures speed, it doesn't build it.
